A topical issue: Big Data Science! Opportunities or threats? How will the world of work change through Big Data? Will it generate completely new job opportunities? And if so, which ones?

“Data-scientist is the sexiest job of the 21st century”
- this was the quintessence of the first “Big Data Science” workshop that the Bonn University Society had realized in the LIMES Institute on 23rd March in cooperation with the company Comma Soft AG and Prof. Joachim L. Schultze (LIMES Institute).

The focus of the meeting was the increasing importance of large amounts of data and the resulting demand for qualified junior staff who deal as a “gold digger” with the analysis of these data that are too large or too complex or changing too fast to have them evaluated with manual and traditional methods of data processing.
At the beginning of the lecture series Stephan Hutmacher, the CEO of Comma Soft (Bonn), and his staff offered an introduction to their methods for the analysis of “Big Data”. Furthermore Prof. Schultze spoke about the huge potential of large amounts of data for science and industry and predicted a change in the nature of modern research.

In the final panel discussion chaired by Professor Max Baur, board member of the Bonn University Society, the audience took the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the subject with the speakers.
