The Femmunity Study , led by Dr. Tal Pecht (LIMES institute, UKB & DZNE) and Jun. Prof. Marie-Christine Simon (University of Bonn), is a multidisciplinary research initiative exploring how menstrual cycles and hormonal contraceptives influence immune function, metabolism, and gut microbiome dynamics. The study seeks to advance our understanding of female physiology and identify potential biomarkers of menstrual and immune health.
Research Aims
Characterize immune system dynamics across the menstrual cycle:
Investigate how natural hormonal fluctuations influence immune activity in healthy women.Assess the effects of oral contraceptives on immunity and metabolism:
Determine whether hormonal contraceptives alter immune function, metabolic parameters, or gut microbiome composition.Explore menstrual fluid as a biomarker of endometrial and immune health:
Analyze menstrual fluid to identify immune and molecular signals that reflect reproductive and systemic health.Examine interactions between hormones, metabolism, and gut microbiome:
Understand how cyclical hormonal changes affect metabolic pathways and gut microbiota composition.
Participant Eligibility
We are seeking participants who:
Are 20–30 years old
Are non-smokers
Have no chronic diseases
Project-Specific Criteria:
Project 1 – Natural Cycle: Regular menstrual cycles, not using hormonal contraceptives
Project 2 – Oral Contraceptives: Currently using birth control pills
Project 3 – Menstrual Fluid: Conveniently providing menstrual fluid samples
How to Participate
By participating, you will contribute to advancing knowledge of menstrual and immune health in women.
